The FMIIC is made up of representatives from government, industry, research, unions and professional associations and is one of a number of Industry Innovation Councils established by the Australian Government through the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE).

The Council focuses on innovation-intensive, high technology, high value-add, high-skill, export-orientated manufacturing. Its primary role is to advise the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science, and Research. It is also championing innovation in manufacturing and helping to build connections between government and industry stakeholders.
